Hearing loss affects one adult out of twenty. It can have dire consequences on the quality of life of an individual, his or her family and friends, as well as at work. Hearing loss can cause social isolation, depression, and even a decrease in work productivity. Finally, hearing loss can be a sign of a brain tumor, such as cerebellopontine angle tumors. The evaluation of hearing loss starts with a meeting with an Otolaryngology specialist that will assess your ears for easily reversible causes such as ear wax. The doctor will then refer you for a hearing test (audiogram). The audiogram will help us find out if you are suffering from conductive hearing loss, due to a problem with the transmission of sound, or sensorineural hearing loss, due to a problem with the transformation of sound into electrical signals understood by your brain. Depending on the results of the hearing test, your doctor will either refer you for additional testing, recommend surgery, or refer you to a hearing aid specialist.

L\u2019ORL vous recommandera ensuite de passer un test d\u2019audition (audiogramme). L\u2019audiogramme permettra de savoir si la surdit\u00e9 est une surdit\u00e9 de conduction, due \u00e0 une probl\u00e8me de transmission des sons, ou bien une surdit\u00e9 de perception, due \u00e0 un probl\u00e8me de transformation du son en signal \u00e9lectrique compris par le cerveau. En fonction des r\u00e9sultats de l\u2019audiogramme, votre sp\u00e9cialiste ORL vous recommandera soit des tests additionnels, soit une chirurgie, soit un appareillage auditif.<\/p>
