Ear wax is a common problem, and can sometimes cause hearing loss due to blockage of the external ear. The most common cause is the use of cotton swabs. It is important to know that cotton swabs are not recommended for the cleaning of the ears. In fact, the ears have a self-cleaning mechanism that does not require the introduction of anything inside the ear canal : this can be dangerous, result in ear wax buildup, and even a perforated ear drum!<\/p>\n

    Do I need to do anything to my ears to prevent ear wax build-up?<\/div>

    Your body produces ear wax to protect the skin of your external ear and kill germs. It is a completely normal and physiological phenomenon. Prevention is preferable for certain groups of people, but the majority of people do not need any type of prevention for ear wax buildup as the ear has a self-cleaning mechanism. Among the patients that need prevention are the very elederly, patients with hearing aids, and those with extreme build-up of ear wax. Talk to your doctor to detemine if you need ear wax removal.<\/p><\/div><\/div>
