It is most often caused by abnormal deposits of bone at the base of an ossicle, the stapes, that prevents vibration of the ossicle and causes hearing loss. It has a familial tendency and is more frequent in women. It can affect both ears.<\/p><p>Otosclerosis manifests as hearing loss due to a decreased vibration of the ossicles. We call this conductive hearing loss, and it is diagnosed with a hearing test. A CT scan of your ears usually shows the surgeon where the otosclerosis is.<\/p><p>Luckily, otosclerosis is completely reversible with a procedure called stapedectomy.
